Day 20 - Fromista, 13 miles
Friendships on the Camino form hard and fast…I met a German woman, Ulla 2 days before… We bonded over sore feet…but over dinner we found the connection went deeper than that. Very little time for superficial conversation here… In fact it’s a bit of a joke we all share that often you don’t know a persons name until an hour or more after you start talking … Last night at dinner, a man joined our table and as we were ready leave, he asked everybodies names.
Kevin from Kona messaged me yesterday that he was having to take another day off for his feet, would I like to meet him in Fromista and we could share a hotel room again…a resounding yes from me! Traveling with another person here is the most inexpensive way to travel and stay in nice places…this very nice room is only about $55…
The weather Gods are loving me right now! The quiet walk out of town into the mist (not fog) covered fields was magical…many pilgrims on the trail, but there is an unspoken code of not talking in the golden morning hours…just a little head nod and “Buen Camino”.
We almost immediately had a fairly steep, long climb out of Castrojeriz… The look back at the top was stunning, but difficult to capture due to the lighting, but then we crested the top to go down, and behold the path ahead…
My feet are definitely on the mend, although I was traveling fairly slowly today…about 5 miles in on this path was a breakfast oasis, I stopped for a not so good cafe con leche…
Then on to the next little village, and a good second breakfast
The path out was more of the same…welcome to the Meseta
I met and walked with Bob from Georgia most of the 6 miles into Boadilla del Camino, a run down, unappealing little village… My feet were toast! The company really helped to get me there… I knew I didn’t have it in me to walk the last 4 miles to Fromista, so called a taxi.
What a welcome sight Kevin was, and the ensuite bathroom with a real bathtub …the view from the room is of a famous church, the most complete Roman church from 1000 something. Waiting for it to open.
